Q. All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors
Q. We understand that All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors is a five-member band. If you don’t mind, could you please tell us the names and the instruments or parts each of them is responsible for?
We had Joshua Booth on guitar, keys and vocals. Brian Doherty on drums, Steven Doherty on guitar, keys and vocals. Jeremy Winter on bass and vocals, and I played guitar, keys and vocals. That was our lineup for live. In the studio, we moved around a bit more and added some other instruments as well.
Q. We’d love to hear about how All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors came together. Could you share the story behind the band’s formation?
The two brothers, Brian and Stiv (Steven Doherty) lived on the same street as Josh from the time they were little kids. The three of them formed a band called Senepede while they were still in middle school and elementary school. They would perform around the area, schools, events, etc. My family moved to their street when I was 12 and I lived between the Doherty’s and Josh. We were all within 5 houses of each other. I never heard kids in a band before and I couldn’t believe how good they were. I think they were 11, 12 and 13 at that point. Dennis Doherty, Bri and Stiv’s dad, was a great mentor. He was a really good drummer and had been in bands. Our taste in music even overlapped a lot, especially for somebody’s dad when you’re that age!
Jeremy lived in the next town and was introduced to us through a mutual friend while we were all in high school. We all quickly bonded over the Beatles and other common tastes. Plus, he was a great musician.

While Senepede was very active, Stiv, Josh and I started a little side project. Just the three of us. kind of a joke, but we made a ton of recordings and videos. We were just being ridiculous, dressing all crazy and just having a blast. It needed a name so I just read it off of a soda can one day – “All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors”, how’s that? It was never meant to be a real thing. The band “Senepede” changed so much we needed a new name, we sort of settled on adopting the name out of default. Nobody seemed to have a better idea. It’s long and it’s tough to remember – great strategy! …and by the way, the four of us who lived on the same street were all left handed, though we all play our instruments righty.
Q. All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavorsは、しばしばMy Bloody ValentineやStereolab、The Flaming Lipsなどと比較されることが多いかと思います。
Q. All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors is often compared to bands such as My Bloody Valentine, Stereolab, and The Flaming Lips. However, we'd love to know ── what kind of music has truly influenced you?
I’ll do my best to speak for everybody for this one. We loved many of those shoegaze staples like MBV, Lush, Stereolab and Rollerskate Skinny, and more I’m forgetting right now, but there were really so many influences in our DNA by the time we were recording our first full length.
The Zombies、Jimi Hendrix、David Bowie、The Beach Boys、The Velvet Underground、Donovan、Sly、初期のPink Floyd、Stevie Wonderが大好きだった。 Astrud GilbertoとかJobim(*注:おそらくAntônio Carlos Jobim)とか。
Obviously, The Beatles, but we liked a lot of other 60’s music. The Zombies, Hendrix, Bowie, Beach Boys, The Velvet Underground, Donovan, Sly, early Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder a lot of Bossa nova like Astrid Gilberto, Jobim, etc. …and a lot of things that might be further away from our world Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Lalo Schifrin, Arnold Schoenberg, Angelo Badalamenti etc, and things like that – and then some jazz of course like Miles, Coltrane, Monk, George Benson, etc.
We liked a ton of pop music too, probably from the earliest 50’s pop and rock right into our era. We were never exclusively about shoegaze or indie rock, or any particular scene so there were so many influences.. we were totally music geeks always looking to discover more. …and there’s a ton of stuff that only one guy might have liked, or myself even that im not even mentioning.

I think we loved the actual sound of shoegaze, but we still loved the songwriting of great pop songs foremost, Motown, the 80s era MTV that we grew up on and all that. We loved MBV to death, but we were never trying to actually write like them so much …we definitely loved drones and walls of sound, whether they were coming from Phil Spector, Indian classical, Debussy – so when Kevin Shields reinvented the wall of the sound we were instantly mesmerized. Somebody once said after a show that we sound like Sonic Youth playing The Beatles and it felt pretty accurate.
Q. Even on your 1996 debut album All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors, we could already sense a strong sense of originality. But with 1998's Turning Into Small, the experimental and innovative qualities were truly striking. What kinds of changes took place within the band during those two years?
By that time, we had developed a great relationship with Alap Momin, who produced and engineered all of those records. That wasn’t our first time in a studio, but it was our first time making a real record with a producer or engineer who was more of a peer. He was fully part of our team by then. That alone was a big change. None of us had ever made anything like Turning before. We were all learning together. Even today, he and I now run a label together, Internet & Weed as well as perform our own music as MRC Riddims. We were really building great bonds back then.
We also had some new gear. Probably the best example is Josh’s Roland GP-100. His guitar sounds had completely changed because of it. It actually made his guitar sound real synthy. It’s a lot of the personality of that record, almost like what would be synth pads now, sort of filing in all the space between everything else. A huge new presence …I later ended up buying THREE of those units to use in Ifwhen, my next band.
Josh’s original unit is still in use at the studio that Alap and myself run in Harlem, NYC. We’ll never part with it! Roland makes some really cool gear, total game changers! The Juno, 808, 909, 303 – it’s insane! …and no, sadly, they were never a sponsor! During the days of the debut, we would just show up with 3 half stacks for the guitars and some more common pedals, etc. All of our guitar rigs had changed and we were also leaning into using the keyboards in new ways.
Also just the timeline of those two records really puts them apart. We were still all teens when we started recording the debut! Those sessions were also very spread out, partly because we had no record label at the time. I believe we started recording the debut in 94 and some of those songs were easily from 92. In between those full lengths, we had also recorded a couple of EPs. Most of that stuff ended up on Straight Blue Line …so there was just a natural evolution within us, but also lots of new influences creeping in. For better and worse, we had lost much of our innocence in between those two records.
Q. The original release of Turning Into Small came out on Gern Blandsten, a label based in New Jersey. At the time, we assume there was some connection to the indie rock and emo scenes. Could you tell us which bands you were actually involved with or had connections to back then?
We weren’t too far from NYC so that was really our scene. We lived about 45 min away and would play in NYC more than anywhere else. At the time, there was no real shoegaze scene to speak of. There weren’t even a ton of indie bands around. We played a lot of shows with punk bands, hardcore bands, even sometimes metal bands …and we were often the oddball and not always well received!
Rye Coalition、Dälek、The Van Pelt、The World/Inferno Friendship Societyといった面々。
The bands we were most associated with were probably our label mates like Rye Coalition, dalek, The Van Pelt, World Inferno Friendship Society. None of us sounded anything alike each other, but they were all cool people and we played some great shows together. The scene for shoegaze in NYC wasn’t really there, but it became a bit stronger around 2004 or so I would say. My second band managed to play on many shoegaze bills in NYC just a few years later so it did eventually arrive, but ANL&LF were just a bit too early.
Q. What were some shoegaze bands active in the U.S. during the late 1990s? We'd love to hear about any you know of.
There really weren’t a ton of American Shoegaze bands at the time. We were always on the hunt for more, but they were tough to find. I really liked some of Loveliescrushing. Rocketship had some great ones. I think some of the guys really liked Bowery Electric. Elliott Smith had more than a hint of shoegaze and I always liked him. I know the UK always had us beat in that department! Most of our shoegaze record collection was definitely London based.
At one point Cornelius, aka Keigo Oyamada, shouted out Turning Into Small in Spin magazine. Fantasma was great and definitely had its own take on shoegaze as I think ANL&LF did. That shoutout did a lot for us and I’m forever grateful. Getting to know him, I discovered he had widely varying influences and similar childhood tastes. He’s not about any one particular sound and I can totally relate to that. He opened the door to getting familiar with some Japanese shoegaze bands and there were several I really liked. A different take on the style – not really Brit, not really American. It definitely had a twist to it as I think we did.
I saw a few bands in Tokyo on my first trip there. I wish I could remember all of them, but I’m certain I saw Astrobrite play a great show and I met up with Luminous Orange who I also really enjoyed.
