Ginny Kim(Vo. Gt.)

Q. We are so happy to be able to interview you again! Two years have passed since our last interview, and I imagine a lot has happened with the band since then. Could you tell us how you feel you’ve grown, both as a band and as individuals, over the past two years?
We definitely have gone through a lot of things since our first Japan tour; we were all students back then, but we all graduated from school now and have been working at different jobs. To international fans, it might have seemed like we were very silent between the release of “nevermind, the winter.” and “afterglow / dawn,” but we have been focusing on playing a lot of local shows during that time, opening for various touring bands, going on a Montreal/Ontario tour and also organizing a DIY shoegaze festival in Toronto.
We have been very active in the music scene here and have learned a lot as musicians in the process. I think the result of that was the release of “afterglow / dawn,” which we feel was a huge step up from our first two EPs in terms of songwriting and production. After releasing the double single, we had struggled a bit trying to focus on music on top of our jobs, but we feel we found a good balance as of now.
Q. Looking at recent photos, it seems like the band went from four members to three. Are you currently a three-piece?
Gt.)とVinny Hau(Vincent Hau / Ba.)。
We have a new lead guitarist Vincent Ta as well as a session drummer Ashton Purvis as our current members, along with the original members Ginny Kim and Vinny Hau.

Q. In our previous interview, you mentioned that the concept revolved around the color “blue.” What is the concept behind last year’s single “afterglow / dawn”?
The double single project “afterglow / dawn” is supposed to represent sunset and sunrise respectively, working as a mirrored version of each other. Afterglow is about letting go of the past, while Dawn is more hopeful, looking forward to a new beginning. We wanted to write two songs that connect and resonate with each other while conveying different emotions at the same time.
Q. EP『nevermind, the winter.』
Q. Compared to your previous EP, “nevermind, the winter,” we felt a significant change in the sound design and the sense of depth on “afterglow / dawn.” The vocals and instruments gained a fresh, vivid resonance, and your signature noisy sound became even more powerful - it feels as though listeners are engulfed in a mix of comfort and nostalgia/heartache. Were there any specific conscious efforts or changes in your recording environment that led to this sonic shift?
The first two EPs that we released were recorded and produced by ourselves in Vinny’s bedroom – so we wanted to try recording at a professional recording studio for “afterglow / dawn” for the first time. After recording all the instruments in the studio, we still mixed and mastered the tracks ourselves, but it took us a very long time until we got to a point where we were satisfied and proud of how they sounded, which took almost a year.
I think our overall songwriting, production and ability to convey our vision into music have improved significantly since the band started, and I am very glad people are able to notice that through our recent release.
Q. Your cinematic influences seem to shine through not just in your music, but also in your visuals and artwork. “afterglow / dawn” gave off vibes of Shunji Iwai and Japanese cinema from the 90s and 00s. Would you say that's accurate? Also, Shunji Iwai’s works seem to be experiencing a global resurgence right now, with many people drawn to his themes and aesthetics. Why do you think this boom is happening today?
We are definitely inspired by Shunji Iwai’s works, like “All About Lily Chou-Chou,” and “Love Letter,” etc. When I was watching his films during high school, I related to a lot of the topics and themes he portrayed in his work. I think many people who encounter his films online nowadays can easily relate to them as well, and maybe that is why his works have been finding a place with an audience even outside of Japan.

Q. Up until now, your releases have mostly centered around EPs rather than full-length albums. Have you considered releasing a full album? If you have a specific preference or commitment to the EP format, could you tell us why?
For our first full-length album, we want to wait until it is the right time – we want it to represent us as a band and our sound in the best way possible, and we want to be in the right circumstances to create that work. Until then, I think we are going to release more music in the form of singles and EPs.
Q. the neverminds
Q. As Japanese fans, it’s truly rewarding to know that the neverminds’ work is influenced by Japanese music and cinema. You spoke about Japanese culture in our last interview as well, but are there any Japanese shoegaze bands, films, or anime that you’re currently paying attention to?
Actually, last October, we went on a Japan trip with some of our friends, and we went to Hitohira and Yukiguni’s concert in Tokyo, which was truly an amazing experience. We’ve been listening to Hitohira’s music for a long time, so we were so happy we got to catch them live. Apart from these bands, we have also been listening to kurayamisaka, Yureruwayurei, Hinemosugara, Tattletale, Reinore, Hammer Head Shark, Aikure, and so many more. As for films/anime, I’ve recently been into “Look Back” by Fujimoto Tatsuki, “Happyend” by Neo Sora, “Monster” by Hirokazu Koreeda.
Q. You have a Japanese tour scheduled for September as part of your broader Asian tour, which is on a larger scale than your previous visit. Given that the neverminds seems to have a strong audience in Asia, was an Asian tour something the members specifically wished for? Also, since this tour is hosted by Oaiko, could you tell us how coming back to Japan came about?
We have been talking about doing a full Asia tour for a long time, which includes not only going back to Japan but also visiting different countries that also have been showing support for our music ever since we started the band. As I (Ginny) am from South Korea and Vinny’s family is from Hong Kong, we always wanted to tour in these regions and interact with the bands that we are greatly influenced by. East Asian Shoegaze scene has so many great bands and artists that we listen to, and we are very lucky to be able to visit these countries and experience the unique scene that we look up to.

As for Oaiko, we have been fans of Hitohira, yeti let you notice, hardnuts and tiny yawn for a long time, so we naturally found out about the label they are currently under. All the shows and festivals Oaiko have been organizing involve many Japanese bands that we love, and we really look up to what they are doing for the shoegaze and alternative scene. I think where they are at right now is what we want to aim for with loveless collective.

Q. You mentioned that the East Asian shoegaze scene has a unique scene that you look up to. I believe this is because you love not only the individual artists, but also the culture and atmosphere of those places. There seems to be something about the scene itself that deeply moves you. What do you think these scenes have in common?
I (Ginny) was born in South Korea, and until my family moved to Canada I always grew up listening to or being exposed to East Asian music and culture and I do feel more connected and seen in that sense. There are many aspects of the East Asian music scene we look up to, but we’ve seen many older generations of bands inspire newer bands (including us) sonically and visually. Kinokoteikoku, one of the bands we are most influenced by as a band, is a great example of that since a lot of current generations of bands are often influenced by them, and we naturally have more admiration for the scene or culture they were a part of.

Q. Your arts and music collective, loveless collective, hosted its second “loveless festival” in July. You seem to be steadily expanding your community through connections with artists across Canada and the US. Looking ahead, what kind of future do you envision - both for the neverminds and your collective activities? Please share any vision you currently have in mind.
I remember mentioning in our last interview that we were thinking about organizing a shoegaze festival in the future. After that interview, we actually started organizing more local shows in and outside of Toronto and hosted “loveless festival” for its first year in July 2025. We didn’t know what to expect at the time, but surprisingly it turned out to be a great success, and we were able to bring the festival back this year with bigger acts like Bleary Eyed and Bubble Tea and Cigarettes. We are very proud of the community that we built here, and we are very excited to see where this project will bring us, for both the neverminds and loveless collective. In the future, when “loveless festival” grows, we hope we can bring some of the Japanese shoegaze bands that we love and introduce them to the audience in Toronto.
Q. Speaking of Toronto, it’s well known for being a vibrant melting pot of cultures with a rich music scene, particularly in hip-hop and indie rock. From your perspective, how do you feel about the current, latest music scene in Toronto?
Toronto has a really great, active music scene in general – there are also a lot of shoegaze/dreampop-adjacent fans out there and we recognize that there is a demand for it. However we also think there weren’t many shows/events that we could attend as fans of the genre, especially around the time we first started the band. That is one of the reasons why we started loveless collective and “loveless festival” – we wanted to put on shows for people who are into this kind of music and we are glad the scene is constantly growing as well.
Q. It’s truly inspiring to see how deeply you’ve been influenced by Japanese culture and various artistic media, and how you’ve translated that into your own work. What is the core drive or belief that propels you forward as individuals and as the band the neverminds? Also, what kind of works do you hope to leave behind in the future?
Just like the musicians and artists that we were inspired by and look up to, we want to create a world of our own that people can be drawn into and feel connected to. I hope people can feel like they just finished reading a book or watching a film after listening to our songs.
