2023年12月、アルバムの発表から約1年が経過し、CDとLPもリリースされたタイミングで、motifsは来日を果たす。それも『Regret, Love, Guilt, Dreams』のCDが再発されたばかりのthe bilinda butchersと共にツアーを巡るというのだから、歓喜したファンも多いことだろう。

motifsは何を考え、アルバムを作ったのか。結成からレコーディングの話、そしてシンガポールのシーンに至るまで、来日公演を間近に控えたバンドの軌跡を、Elspeth Ong（Vo. Gt.）が語る。

Q. この度はインタビューを受けていただきありがとうございます。まずはじめに、motifsの結成の経緯を教えてください。5人はどういったきっかけで出会ったのでしょうか？

Q. Thank you for doing the interview.  First off, please give me some background on how motifs came to be.  What brought the five of you together?

こちらこそありがとうございます！　日本でプレイできることをとても楽しみにしています。最初にお互いを全く知らなくて、シンガポールのミュージシャン用のオンラインフォーラムで出会いました。「シューゲイズ・バンドのためにメンバー募集中」という投稿をして、何回かメンバーチェンジをしてから、現在の5人組で結成しました。

Thank you for having us! We’re so excited to play in Japan. We were all strangers who met online on a Singaporean music forum. We made a post “Looking For: Shoegaze band” and after multiple lineup changes, all 5 of us came together to form this current lineup.

Q. motifsのサウンドは明確にシューゲイズ、ドリームポップと言えるものだと思います。どういった理由で、あるいはどういった影響源によってそのようなサウンドに至ったのでしょうか？ また、メンバーそれぞれの音楽的嗜好についても知りたいです。

Q. I think you can definitely call motifs' sound shoegaze and dream pop. How and why did you arrive at that sound?  I would also like to know about each members' musical taste.

シューゲイズ・バンドをやりたいというきっかけでオンラインで出会ったので、結成した時からそういう音楽を作ることは決まっていました。みんなシューゲイズが好きですが、他にも様々な要素から影響を受けています。Badrul（Badrul Amin / Synth. Vo. Gt）は元々メタル・バンドで活動していました。Paul（Paul Yuen / Ba.）はMuseの大ファンで、JJ（Jit Jenn Tan / Gt.）はアンビエントやポスト・ロック、アジアン・シューゲイズをよく聴いています。私はシンガーソングライターやフォークを聴いています。それで、みんな基本的にインディー、オルタナティヴ・ロックやJoy Division、The Cure、New Orderなどのシューゲイズ、ドリームポップ、オルタナティヴ・サウンドに大きな影響を与えたバンドが好きです。Jolin（Jolin Chiam / Dr.）はドラムがすごく上手くて、たくさんのジャンルをやっているアーティストにセッション・ドラマーとして参加しているため、色々なジャンルやテクニカルな音楽を聴いています。

I think when forming the band, we already knew we wanted to play shoegaze and dream pop; that’s how we found each other online. We all like shoegaze, but we also have a wide variety of influences. Badrul used to play in a metal band, Paul is a big fan of Muse, JJ listens to lots of ambient music, post-rock, and asian shoegaze, Els listens to lots of singer-songwriter or folk music, and in general we all listen to indie-rock / alternative rock. Older classics like Joy Division, The Cure, New Order, everything that influences the shoegaze / dream-pop / alternative sound. Jolin is a really great drummer and she listens to lots of technical stuff and a very wide range of music, because she is a session drummer for many musicians of different genres.

Q.『remember a stranger』は本当に素晴らしいアルバムで、個人的にもよく聴いています。ドリーミーかつノスタルジックで、壮大なスケールと繊細な感覚が同居したような音像が印象的です。完成した際の手応えはどうでしたか？

Q. "remember a stranger" is a truly great album, and I personally listen to it often.  It's dreamy and nostalgic, and the way that the grand scale and delicate sensibility of the music coexist is impressive.  What was the response like when the album was completed?

優しい言葉を言ってくれてありがとうございます！　アルバムの作曲に3年かかったので、やっと完成させた達成感でほっとしました。2019年の初頭に書いた曲がいくつかあるのと、最後に作った曲は「Remember a Stranger」で2021年に書いたと思います。その3年間、曲の作り方もみんなで音楽のやり方も進化してきて、今のメンバーと一緒にアルバムを作れて良かったなと思います。壮大なスケールと繊細な感覚を感じてくれて嬉しいです。そういうつもりで曲を作ったんです。大きく、広く、開かれた空間のように響いてほしいと思っています。しかし同時に、個人的であり、リスナーが自分自身の方法で曲に繋がりを感じることも望んでいます。

Thank you for your kind words! We felt accomplished and it was a big relief when it was completed, because we took 3 years to write the album. There were songs written in early 2019, and I think our final song, Remember a Stranger (the title track) was written in 2021. Over the span of 3 years the way we write and the way we play together as a band evolved, and I think it’s really nice that we were all able to write this album together. I’m glad you could feel the grand scale and delicate sensibility of it, because it is what we intended. We want the music to sound big, like a vast, wide, open, space; but we also want it to be personal and we want listeners to connect to the songs in their own way.

Q. 楽曲はどのように作られていくのでしょうか。誰かのデモを元に構築していくのか、スタジオでセッションのように作り上げていくのか、具体的な作詞作曲のプロセスについて知りたいです。

Q. How do you go about writing songs?  Do you build around someone's demo, are songs created in studio sessions?  Please tell me about your process.

曲によって作り方が違って、2つの方法で作っています。ジャムセッションで作った曲もありますし、一緒に作ったデモか、一人のメンバーが作ったデモから始まった曲もあります。曲が様々な方法で書かれているのが好きですね。異なるプロセスがあることは面白いし、各メンバーが自分自身の「もの」を曲作りのプロセスに持ち込むのも興味深い。「Hourglass」は元々Badrulが作ったデモでした。彼は曲のほとんどの部分を書いて、私と一緒に後半の歌詞を完成させました。「Valentine」はJJが曲（メロディ）を書いてから、私が歌詞を書きました。JJとPaulは2人で「fluorescent」の曲も書いています。私はアコースティック・ギターを使って「summersad」を書いていて、他のメンバーがそのデモから構築しました。「Remember a Stranger」も同じように、シンセとヴォーカルとアコースティックだけで作ったデモから始まりました。ボイスメモや初期のデモ、ジャムセッションの録音を振り返ることで、曲が最初の段階から最終的なスタジオ・デモに至るまでの過程が見られるのはワクワクしますね。

Different songs are written differently, we have written songs using both of the methods you’ve mentioned! Some songs are written together in a jamming session, some are written by a few of us on a demo, some songs are built upon 1 person’s demo. I love that the songs were written in so many different ways, it’s interesting to have different processes and to have each member bring their own “thing” to the songwriting process. Hourglass was a demo that Badrul wrote, he wrote most of the parts and I finished the second half of the lyrics with him. JJ wrote the music for Valentine and I wrote the lyrics over that. JJ and Paul wrote the music for fluorescent together. I wrote summersad on acoustic guitar, then the band built on that demo. I wrote Remember a Stranger as an acoustic song with just keys and vocals, and they band built on that demo also. It’s wonderful looking back at our voice memos, early demos, and jamming session recordings– and seeing how the songs went from their early stages to the final studio demo.

Q.『remember a stranger』の制作において、機材やレコーディングの方法などで特にこだわった部分、一方で苦労した部分があれば、それぞれ教えてください。

Q. Regarding the production of "remember a stranger", did the band have any particular preference when it came to gear or recording methods?  On the other hand, please talk about some of the difficulties you encountered during the process.

私たちは全てにリアルな楽器を使いたいと思っていて、楽器のどれもプログラムされたサウンドにしたくなかった。エフェクトに関しても、ベース、シンセサイザー、ギター用のペダルボードで録音し、その後はLeonard Soosay（プロデューサー兼サウンド・エンジニアで、私たちとツアーに出ている）によってポスト・プロダクションの作業が行われました。ただし、エフェクトの大部分はアナログで、ペダルボードと楽器を介しています。

苦労したのは、録音の直前にメンバーの変更があり、ドラマーがいなかったということです。できるだけ早く録音を始めることを望んでいました。ライブドラムを録音するためにセッション・ドラマーを雇うよりも、ドラムをプログラムすることも考えました。それがより手ごろな費用になると考えたからです。幸いにも、Jolinがバンドに加わってくれて、今では最高のドラマーを得ました。

I think we knew we wanted to use real instruments for everything and we did not want any of the instruments to be programmed sounds. Even for effects, we recorded with our pedalboards for bass, synths, and guitars. Anything extra afterwards was added in post-production by Leonard Soosay (Our producer and sound engineer who is also on tour with us). But the bulk of the effects are analog and through our pedalboards and instruments.

A difficulty we encountered was we did not have a drummer when we were about to record, due to a lineup change. We were really desperate to start recording as soon as possible, and considered programming the drums because that would have been more affordable than hiring a sessionist to record live drums. Thankfully, we got Jolin to join our band and now we have the best drummer ever.

Q. motifsのサウンドは、シンセサイザーが良いアクセントを生み出しているように思います。バンド・サウンドの中で、シンセサイザーはどのような役割を果たしていると思いますか？

Q. I feel that the synthesizers add a nice accent to motifs' sound.  What role do you feel the synthesizers play in your sound?

シンセサイザーのサウンドスケープは広がりがあり、空間的かつ幻想的で、ミックスで重要な役割を果たしていると感じています。ギターは大部分でジャングリーもしくはファジーといったサウンドになりますが、温かいサウンドのパッドを作るためにオシレーターの組み合わせを使い、それがStrymon Bigsky（リヴァーブのエフェクター）を通過することで、豊かで広がりのあるサウンドになります。私は古典的な80年代のシンセサイザーにすごくインスパイアされていて、そのアナログ・サウンドをバンドに取り入れるためにベストを尽くしていますね。

I feel like the synthesizers take a vital role in the mix for its’ expansive and ethereal soundscapes. While the guitars can sound jangly or fuzzy for most parts, I utilise a combination of oscillators creating warm sounding pads, which then goes through the Strymon Bigsky, giving it that lush and wide sound. I’m heavily inspired by vintage 80s synths and I try my best to incorporate that analog sound to the band.

Q.『remember a stranger』には、”薄れゆく記憶”（fading memories）と”喪失への対処”（coping with loss）という2つのテーマが掲げられています。こうしたテーマに至った理由を教えてください（徐々に曖昧になっていく記憶を作品として留めておく、というような意図があるのでしょうか）。

Q. On "remember a stranger", themes of "fading memories" and "coping with loss" come up.  Please tell me the reason behind these themes.  (Is there an intention to preserve gradually fading memories as artwork?)

私はほとんどの曲の歌詞を書きましたが、「Hourglass」は主にBadrulが歌詞を書いています。曲を書く際、私は自分の子供時代のことや、成長する中でどのようにして思い出が私を形作ったかについて考えていました。それらの思い出の多くは困難な出来事のもので、それらの経験を自然な形で処理する手段として音楽を使っていたと思います。

また、人生ではあらゆる種類の関係が崩れてしまうものです──家族、友達、恋人の関係もそう──それは避けられないし、とても悲しいことです。他人の関係が崩れるのを見ると本当に悲しくなります。思い出は他人との関係から残る唯一のもので、私にとっても貴重なものなので、できるだけ大切にしようと努力しています。しかし、時間の経過と共に忘れることは簡単です。記憶は正確ではなく、あくまで自分に語りかける物語に過ぎません。そして、その物語は時間と共に変化する可能性があります。このアルバムを書くことは、それらの思い出を記録しようとする試みであり、時間が過ぎる中で薄れつつあるにも関わらず、記憶の一部として残そうとするものでした。薄れゆく思い出の感触を描いた映画として、『エターナル・サンシャイン』も私にとってはインスピレーションの一部でした。

アルバムのアートワークは、JJが家族旅行中に高雄市（台湾）の海岸で撮影した写真です。薄れた写真と幼い子供がアルバムの本質を捉えていたので使いました。私たちの初の海外公演は台湾でしたが（今年の6月）、それが本当にクールだったからでもありますね。それと、私たちは青が大好きです。

I wrote most of the lyrics for the songs, except for Hourglass which Badrul mostly wrote. At the time of writing the songs, I was thinking a lot about my childhood and how certain memories shaped me as I was growing up. A lot of those memories are of difficult events, and I guess I naturally used music as a way to process those experiences.

I also feel like in life, relationships of all sorts fall apart all the time – relationships with your family, with friends, with lovers – it’s inevitable and I get really sad when it happens, and I get really sad when I watch others’ relationships fall apart as well. Memories are all we have that remain from these relationships with other people, and I try very very hard to hold on to them because they are precious to me. But with the passage of time, it’s easy to forget. Memory is not accurate and it’s just a story that you tell yourself, and over time that story might change, whether or not you are aware of it. Writing this album was a way to try and make a record of these memories, even as they slip away as time passes. A movie that really portrayed the feeling of fading memories for me is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which I also drew inspiration from when writing the album.

The album art is a picture that JJ took off the coast of Kao Hsiung when he was on family vacation. The faded picture and the young child really captured the essence of the album, so we decided to use that. It was significant because our first overseas show ended up being in Taiwan (In June this year), so that was really cool. Also we really like the color blue.

Q. Cosmic Child、Sobs、Subsonic Eye、Blushなど、シンガポールだけでも良質なシューゲイズ周辺のバンドをいくつも挙げることができます。当事者として、シンガポールのインディー・シーンをどう見ていますか？ また、彼らとの交流や、彼らから影響を受けることはありますか？

Q. There are several quality shoegaze and shoegaze-adjacent bands from Singapore, including Cosmic Child, Sobs, Subsonic Eye, Blush, etc.  As part of that group, how do you view the Singapore indie scene?  Do you interact with or draw influence from any of the aforementioned artists?

シンガポールには豊かなインディー・シーンがあると思います。シンガポールは小さいですが、あなたが挙げたバンドのように、本当に素晴らしい音楽を作るミュージシャンがたくさんいます。そして、ライブに足を運び、音楽をサポートする人々のコミュニティもあります。それらのバンドたちは私たちよりも数年早く活動を始めているのもあって、あまり密接な交流はないです。Subsonic Eyeとは2ヶ月ほど同じスタジオを使っていましたが、ほとんど顔を合わせることはなかったですね。ただ、私たちは間違いなくそれらのバンドから影響を受けているし、とてもインスパイアされています。motifsのバンド・メイトとしてお互いを知る前から、私たちは彼らのライブに（別々に、知らない者どうしとして）足を運んでいたし、地元の音楽シーンに良質なシューゲイズ／ドリームポップ・サウンドを定着させるのに、彼らは本当に貢献してくれたと思います。彼らが成長し、進化し、海外ツアーを行い、KEXPのようなチャンネルにまで出演するのを見るのも、とても刺激的です。シンガポールにシューゲイズ・ミュージックのためのスペースがあることを実感することができました。

もっと広い意味では、シンガポールのオルタナティヴ・バンドも、ここ（シンガポール）にオルタナティヴ・ミュージックのスペースがあることに気付かせてくれました。地元の音楽のためのスペースを積極的に作り、そのために戦い、支持してくれる人たちに本当に感謝しています。簡単なことではありませんが、シンガポールの音楽を愛し、信じる人々のおかげでシーンがあります。その一員になれたことを本当に感謝しています。

I think that there is a rich Indie scene in Singapore. We may be small but there are many musicians that make really great music, like the bands you mentioned. And there is a community of people that turn up to the gigs and support the music as well. We don’t interact very closely with these bands, I think because they started out a few years earlier than us. We did share a studio space with Subsonic eye for about 2 months, but we rarely saw each other as well. We definitely draw influence from these bands and were/are very inspired by them. Before we even knew each other as bandmates in motifs, we would go to their shows (separately, as strangers), and I think they really helped to establish a good shoegaze / dream-pop sound in the local music scene. Watching these bands grow and evolve, tour overseas, and even make it onto channels like KEXP is also very inspiring. It helped us to realize that there is a space for shoegaze music in Singapore.

In a wider context, the alternative bands in Singapore also helped us to realize that there is a space for alternative music here. We are really grateful for the people that actively create a space for local music, and who fight for it and who champion it. It’s not easy but because of the people who love and believe in music in Singapore, there is a scene. We are really grateful to have the honor to be a part of it.

Q. シンガポールやアジアに留まらず、現在のシューゲイズ・シーンにおいて特に注目しているアーティストやバンドはいますか？

Q. Beyond just Singapore and Asia, what bands in the current shoegaze scene are you particularly interested in?

Deafheavenの最新アルバム『Infinite Granite』がすごく好きです。この間、バンコクのライブとシンガポールで開催された「AXEAN Music Festival」でWhirrのカバーをやりました。アジアのお気に入りのアーティストといえば、Lucid Express、Megumi Acorda、Death of Heatherですね。アジア以外では、Soft Blue Shimmer、DIIV、Beach Fossils、Launder、Life on Venus、Nothing、Slow Crush、Wild Nothingなどが好きです。もちろんAiriel、Duster、Cocteau Twins、My Bloody Valentineといったクラシック・シューゲイズも好きです。

We love Deafheaven’s latest album, Infinite Granite. We also recently covered a Whirr song for our show in Bangkok, Thailand and at the AXEAN Music Festival back in Singapore. There are a few Asian shoegaze bands we really like and are inspired by, like Lucid Express, Megumi Acorda and Death of Heather. Beyond Asia, some shoegaze bands we like include: Soft Blue Shimmer, DIIV, Beach Fossils, Launder, Life on Venus, Nothing, Slow Crush, Wild Nothing, Deafcult, Gleemer, Alvvays, Slowdive. and of course the classic shoegaze bands like Airiel, Duster, Cocteau Twins and My Bloody Valentine.

Q. 今回の来日ツアーでは、アメリカのthe bilinda butchersとも共演しますね。私は以前よりthe bilinda butchersの音楽もよく聴いていたので、今回のツアーはとても楽しみです。motifsのみなさんにとって、the bilinda butchersはどういった存在でしょうか？

Q. On your upcoming Japan Tour, you'll be performing with the bilinda butchers.  I've been listening to them for a while as well, and I'm looking forward to the tour.  In your eyes, what kind of presence do the bilinda butchers have?

the bilinda butchersは、私たちよりもずっと長い歴史があって、シューゲイズ・シーンで確固たる地位を築いています。彼らと共演できるなんて本当に現実離れ（surreal）してるし、できるだけ彼らから学びたいと思っています。もし機会があれば、10年以上バンドを続けてきた経験や、ツアーやライブについて……あるいはアメリカのインディー・ミュージック・シーンがどんなものなのか聞いてみたいですね。

the bilinda butchers have been around for much longer than we have, and they’ve established a strong presence in the shoegaze scene. It’s really surreal that we get to perform with them, and we’re excited to learn from them as much as we can. Perhaps if there’s an opportunity, we can ask them about their experiences being in a band for more than a decade, and about touring and playing shows… or what the indie music scene in the US is like.

Q. 今後のmotifsの活躍も楽しみにしています。リリースの予定や、活動における展望などがあれば教えてください。

Q. I'm looking forward to seeing what's in store for motifs in the future.  Do you have any plans for releases or other activities moving forward? 

予定はありますよ！　ツアーが終わってシンガポールに帰ったら新曲を作り始めます。新しい曲に取り組むのはとても楽しみだし、準備も整っています。

2023年はたくさんのライブを色々な国ですることができました。本当にありがたい経験ですね。だけど、新曲があれば、ライブでもっとたくさんのものを提供できると感じているので、もっといい曲を書きたいし、ミュージシャンとして、バンドとして向上し続けたいと考えています。

Yes! We will be working on writing new music when we return to Singapore after the tour. We are really excited and ready to work on new music. We’ve spent 2023 playing lots of shows, and we have had the opportunity to play our music in different countries. It’s an experience we are really grateful for.

I think we all feel that there is more we can offer at live shows if we have new material, so our focus moving forward will be on writing new music instead of playing live shows. We want to write better music as well and keep improving as musicians and as a band.

シンガポールのシューゲイズ／ドリーム・ポップバンド。シューゲイザー、ポスト・パンク、そして80年代と90年代のドリームポップからインスピレーションを得ており、軽快なメロディーとリヴァーブの効いたセンチメンタルなサウンドを融合させ、親しみやすさと新鮮さを併せ持つ、まるで思い出のような幽玄なサウンドスケープを作り出している。

Vol.3は、Juvenile JuvenileやWallflowerなどのメンバーとして知られ、現在はドリームポップ・デュオであるStill Dreamsとして活動する、Ryuta Wachiの5枚。

■ Letting Up Despite Great Faults – Letting Up Despite Great Faults（2009）

ドリームポップというジャンルを知ったのは、この1stアルバムでした。バンド名や曲名、歌詞、アートワーク全てに統一された儚い美意識に圧倒されると同時に、自分もバンドをやりたい！と思ったきっかけの作品です。初めて「Our Younger Noise」のMVを観た時の、理想の世界を見つけたような感覚を覚えています。2014年に彼らと共演した際、僕が使っていたボロボロのジャズマスターをギター／ヴォーカルのマイクに貸したら音源そのままの音で演奏していて、自分のアンプやエフェクターのセッティングの甘さを痛感しました。

■ The Depreciation Guild – Spirit Youth（2010）

一時期、The Pains of Being Pure at Heartにもドラムで参加していたカート・フェルドマンがギター／ヴォーカルを務めるバンドの2ndアルバム。リリースされた当時はまだジャンルのクロスオーバーが進んでおらず、シューゲイズ＋チップチューン的なサウンドがとても新鮮に響き、いまだにそのロマンティックな音像に聴き惚れています。2016年にカートがIce Choirというバンドで来日公演したときは、本作収録の大名曲「Dream About Me」も披露してくれました。まさか以前のバンドの曲が聴けるとは思っていなかったので、とても嬉しいサプライズでした。

■ The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – Belong（2011）

多くの人々にとって特別なバンド、ペインズの2ndアルバム。「Heart in Your Heartbreak」は、僕がやっていたWallflowerというバンドで最初に合わせた曲の一つです。どの楽器を取っても音響処理が素晴らしく、ハイファイでクリアな音像のシューゲイズに衝撃を受けました。このアルバムがリリースされた年に僕たちはバンドを始め、最初の音源制作をしていました。この作品はもちろん目標の音源の一つになり、どんなミックスをすればこんなパンチのある音になるのか、ひたすら議論していました。

江戸時代のカップルの物語をテーマにした1stアルバム。学生の頃、水泳後の歴史の授業中に居眠りした時に見る夢を思い出す、荒唐無稽かつ美しい世界を感じられるアルバムです。一つの絵巻を読んでいるような感覚を味わせてくれるこの作品は、曲単位ではなくアルバムという形態でリリースすることの意義を改めて認識させてくれました。2016年に行われた来日公演で演奏された「Lover’s Suicide」では、ギターの音が現実離れした美しさを放っていて、まるでバンドが魔法使いのようでした。

彼らのこれまでのシングルやEPを中心に編集された日本オリジナルのミニアルバム。2016年、この編集盤を引っ提げた彼らの来日ツアーに、僕がやっていたJuvenile Juvenileというバンドで帯同したのは大切な思い出です。シューゲイズ・バンドのライヴはどうしても下を向いて突っ立って演奏しがちですが、彼らのライブはめちゃくちゃアツく、たくましいものでした。その熱量で演奏される「North」には行ったことのないイギリスの景色が目に浮かぶほどの迫力を感じました。
